The cuisine is one of, if not my top favourite food, and I’ve been hankering for a Mexican restaurant in the area for longer than I can remember. Having recently moved back to Burnley, I was slow to discover the revelation that is Urban Burritos, which has just moved from Royle Road into bigger premises in Standish Street. Lewis Walstow, the 20-year-old owner and head chef, has tapped into a hunger for fresh and healthier fast food, with the added bonus of a globally inspired menu offering cheaper prices than your typical Mexican restaurant. That hunger may be all mine, though, given how I wolfed down a veggie chilli burrito like there was no tomorrow, which is some effort as the portions are certainly generous. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the delicious blend of sweetness and spice, and the layers of flavour all wrapped up in a soft tortilla imported all the way from America. Meanwhile, my other half enjoyed the brisket burrito: “amazing” was his word for it. Price-wise, you’re looking at around £4-6 for a burrito, making it an affordable alternative to a pizza or curry when you fancy a takeaway. The menu also offers burgers, hotdogs, nachos, burrito bowls, loaded/dirty fries and quesadillas. Businessman Lewis says he’s also looking to bring in tables and chairs for dining-in, and while the venue is small, it’s a must-visit pitstop for a bite to each on your lunch break. The chef also has his eyes on the student market. His venue is certainly dressed for that demographic with its cool, graffiti-style interior - an artsy skull-themed mural. I hope his move to Standish Street is followed by other independent food brands aiming to transform the area into a thriving cultural hub offering a non-traditional gastro gateway into the town centre. I don’t think I’m the only food lover who’s waited a long time for a Mexican venue in Burnley. And Lewis, who says he spent six months perfecting his recipes during lockdown, proves just why patience is a virtue. All I can add is that our trip to Urban Burritos was worth the wait.
