Paul Wickham, former owner of Clitheroe Music in Moor Lane, is a baritone on the run!

When he’s not out running on the hills and fells around Clitheroe – often accompanied by his Border Collie Gibson – Paul is singer with the five-time UK champion Bolton Barbershop Harmony Society, less formally known as The Cottontown Chorus.

In early July this 60-man chorus, also a registered charity, will travel to Las Vegas to represent the UK at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s annual international convention. There it will compete agains the best barbershop choruses from across the USA, Canada and other parts of the world.

This is a massive undertaking and the chorus has been busy fund-raising for months. For his part Paul – who sings in the baritone section – hopes to use his love of running to support the chorus effort.

He explained: “Later this year I will turn 50 and my ultimate aim is to run 50 UK Athletics races in my 50th year. Then I thought that if I could run half of them before we fly to America, that would be a good challenge and an opportunity to raise much-needed funds for the club.”

The chorus has a handful of Ribble Valley men in its ranks, including Waddington’s Mike Firth, whose son Neil is its Musical Director. For more visit:
