Teenage singing sensation Ella Shaw is flying the flag for the Ribble Valley as she aims for the top.

The 16-year-old pupil of St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington, has won a place in the final four of radio station Key 103 fm’s Future Stars talent contest. She was one of more than 120 singers and musicians who entered the contest.

And, in a competition dominated by talent from Manchester, Ella hopes local folk will support her in the public vote to pick the winner.

Ella, from Langho, won her place in the final by singing her own dubstep version of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good”, is competing against other hopefuls at the new Future Skills college at Media City, Salford Quays. When Key 103 presenter Adam Catterall announced the final four on the air, Ella was on a shopping trip to York with mum Janine, aunt Amelia Crossan and gran Christine Kenrick.

“We were in a restaurant, and luckily there weren’t many people in,” said mum Janine. “We just went crazy.”

For the next stage of the contest, voting was launched at the Student Spring Break at Manchester Arndale, where all the acts performed two songs.

Ella sang her winning “Feeling Good” and “Dog Days”, a Florence and the Machine number.

The winner will be the act who receives the most public votes by the closing date of June 27th, and will have the chance to perform live at the MEN Arena, the biggest stage in Manchester, to open “Key 103 Live” on July 28th. They also get £500 to help their career as a musician.

Ella is not looking for instant “X-Factor”-style fame ,but wants to perform professionally. She studies with Joy Fielding, of Langho, and a vocal coach from Bolton. Grandad Gordon Shaw used to sing with the Renaissance Singers at Blackburn Cathedral. Ella said: “The aim is to collect as many votes as possible by raising my profile and promoting myself, while raising money for the Cash For Kids charity. Each vote donates £1 to Cash for Kids with no standard network charge and every penny goes to the charity.”
