Renowned local church musician and music teacher Jean Mary Hartley has died aged 84. She had been ill for some time and had been recently cared for at Longridge Lodge, Longridge, and Oakfield Nursing Home, Forton, Preston.

A lover of music all her life, Mrs Hartley worked as a piano and singing teacher for many years from her home on Chatburn Road, Clitheroe, and alongside her husband Donald, church organist, she directed the choirs of Whalley Parish Church and St Helen’s Church, Waddington.

They were the first married couple in the world to be both awarded the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Certificate in Church Music – a rare honour.

Prior to this, Mrs Hartley taught for 10 years at Pendle Junior School, then taught music at Moorland School.

Her late husband was the owner of the family business, M Hartley and Son, former gents outfitter on King Street, Clitheroe.

The couple’s four children, Julie, Cathy, David and Paul survive them, along with four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at St Helen’s Church Waddington on Wednesday, February 17th at 11 am followed by internment at Clitheroe Cemetery. It will not be held at St Mary Magdalene’s Church in Clitheroe. Her family request that any tributes are in the form of donations for the Royal School of Church Music to sustain the choral tradition, and are sent to Clitheroe Funeral Services, Whalley Road.
