Villagers learned about the history of the community where they live from someone who has lived there for half a century.
Lilian Hargreaves came to Langho in 1964 with her late husband Frank to oversee the development of Mytton Fold Farm Hotel in the heart of the village.
Lilian spoke to the Langho in Bloom group about the history of the landmark site and how she oversaw its development from a family farm to the present hotel and leisure complex it is today with various stages in between.
Tracing the history of the farm from 1702, Lilian talked about its origins as a private lunatic asylum known locally as “Madhouse Farm” and how the arrival of the railway led to the demise of the facility.
In particular, Lilian talked of the struggles faced by her family in trying to secure funds for business development as well as weathering the various farming and financial crises along the way.
Nonetheless, the one thing that served her and Frank well was their stoic determination to make a success. They achieved their dreams in 1994 by becoming the only three star hotel in the area with its own golf course, with the grand opening performed by football legend Kenny Dalglish.
Lilian’s knowledge and experience of “life in Langho” is extensive and she peppered her talk with interesting and amusing anecdotes about the people she’s met along the way.
Diana Rushton, Events Co-ordinator from Langho in Bloom, supported Lilian by carrying out additional research and putting together a power-point presentation which complemented Lilian’s talk.
Diana said : “I am a relative newcomer to Langho and have a keen interest in local history. Helping Lilian with research for her talk has meant I have picked up some interesting facts about Langho.”
Lilian said: “Being invited by Langho in Bloom to deliver this talk about Mytton Fold and my family history has been a wonderful experience as it’s allowed me to reflect on all the joy and happiness that my connection with Langho has brought.
"We are all impressed with the progress made by the Langho in Bloom team and this event tonight will helps towards their funds.”
Veronica Hargreaves thanked Lilian for sharing her personal family stories and she also thanked Diana for her hours of research and work in compiling the presentation.
Profits of over £400 from the evening will be used towards winter planting of the various areas adopted by Langho in Bloom.
