Paid man Walker stars in Read win

Read professional Matthew Walker showed all his class with an all-round man of the match display as they beat Ribblesdale Wanderers by 39 runs at Whalley Road on Saturday.

The former Lowerhouse man had found runs hard to come by this season, scoring 125 in five innings, with a best of 42.

But he got back in the groove in the Ribble Valley derby, his 95 coming in 74 deliveries, with 12 fours and four sixes.

Captain Michael Whalley won the toss for Read and, unsurprisingly, chose to bat, and the hosts were 250 all out in 38.4 overs.

The skipper was bowled for a four-ball duck, but Walker shared 52 with former captain Kyle O’Connor (35) and 66 with Conor Lowes (26) before he was before he was fourth man out at 201.

Jack Wood added 39 and Andrew Laycock 18 to see Read to 250, as Sam Jackson took 2-31, David Howard 3-37 and David Steinson 3-29.

In reply, Read had Ribblesdale in trouble at 58-5, but Primosh Perera shared 82 with Joe Briggs (27), for the seventh wicket, to take he score to 192, beore he fell without addition, two short of his century, his 98 coming off 88 balls.

Walker took the key wicket, one of his 4-41, and Wanderers were dismissed for 211in the penultimate over.

Bailey Richards took 2-61, and Ben Woodall 2-26.

Read entertain Whalley in the Ribblesdale Cricket League on Saturday while Ribblesdale Wanderers play host to Euxton at Church Meadow where they’ll hope to get their promotion charge back on course.
