Max Litchfield will swim as a senior for Britain for the first time at the European Championships in London next month, on his way to an Olympic debut.

The 21-year-old, whose mother Donna went to Downham Primary School and Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, has secured a Rio place at British trials for the Games.

Litchfield, a City of Sheffield swimmer, finished 0.03sec inside the target selection time in the 400 metres medley on day three at the British Swimming Championships in Glasgow in 4 min 12.05sec – the third fastest in the world this year.

And he said: “I have dreamed of this day for years and years.

“I always said when I was younger that I would make that Olympic team, and that has become a real experience since then.

“It is a bit weird really but I am really, really happy. 4:08 won the world title last year. There’s no reason why I can’t take some more seconds off and win a medal.”
