Clitheroe moved top of the Foster’s Lancashire League Phase A table after deposing leaders Darwen following a seven-wicket win over their rivals at Chatburn Road on Saturday.

As Phase Two got underway, Paul Gaskell’s men claimed a maximum 12 points on what could be a pivotal afternoon in the title chase.

Sam Halstead took 4-25, professional Fawad Alam 3-21 and Harrison Phelan 2-7 as Darwen were dismissed for just 72 in 40.3 overs after being inserted by the hosts.

John Cordingley, batting at seven, was the only man in double figures as he hit 18 for the visitors.

Darwen made early inroads into the Clitheroe reply, as professional Calvin Savage reduced the locals to 2-1, seeing off opener Sam Mulligan first ball and Jack Dewhurst, both without scoring, both trapped in front.

Dave Bowden then had opener Ali Ross (2) out lbw at 45, after Alam helped get the innings up and running.

The Chatburn Road professional then went on to hit four fours in an unbeaten 42, putting on an unbroken partnership with 28 with Peter Dibb (10 not out) to take Clitheroe to the top of the table, with Darwen dropping down to third place, behind Todmorden.

On Sunday, Clitheroe’s LCB Knockout quarter-final against Lancashire League rivals Lowerhouse got underway at the second attempt, but the game couldn’t be completed due to the inclement weather.

The West Enders had made 187-3, with three overs remaining in their innings.

So the sides will have to try a third time on Saturday – with the mouthwatering possibility of a semi-final clash with Burnley, who beat Lytham 6-5 on a bowlout on Sunday.

Clitheroe are at Todmorden in the league on Sunday.
