Cat’s Whiskers nightclub reunion

DO YOU remember going down “the Cat’s” in Burnley?

That was how the former Cat’s Whiskers nightclub was affectionately known to the hundreds of young people who went there to dance the night away in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s.

And you will have to chance to re-live those days as a reunion night, featuring some of the DJs who used to spin the discs on the stage including Andrew Pickles who is travelling over from Australia, is to be held on Friday, September 16th. Other DJs lined up to play include Steve Hindley and Ricky Gallamore.

Housed in what is now Gala Bingo at the bottom of Centenary Way, the Cat’s Whiskers featured the iconic head of a grinning feline wearing a top hat that became a landmark in the town.

The reunion will be held at Lava and Ignite nightclub in Burnley and organiser, Trisha Penrose, a former Burnley Express reporter is hoping that as many people as possible will go along to re-live their youth. Before it became the Cat’s Whiskers the nightspot was called the Locarno, better known as “Burnley Mecca’’ and in the 60s played host to many of the decade’s top bands. During the Cat’s Whiskers heyday a second disco opened in the former Lancastria Suite next door. Annabelle’s was just as popular and the reunion also includes that nightspot.

Featuring music from the 80s tickets are priced at £6 and this includes a free glass of bubbly.
