Wintry showers and a snow-covered course formed a seasonal backdrop to the annual Captain’s Drive-In at Clitheroe Golf Club last Saturday.
Newly-installed club captain Ian Walsh drove himself into office in front of a large gathering of members, many of whom went on to compete in a 9-hole Fourball Betterball Stableford competition.
Also driving themselves into office were the lady captain Judy Walne, junior captain Sam Geddes and the seniors’ captain Richard Crossley.
A total of 88 golfers competed in the 9 hole Stableford competition with the winners being Geoff Sutcliffe and Ron Mason with 23 points, followed by Mark Young and Chris Silverwood, who were runners-up on 22 points after a card play-off with Matt Garner and Geoff Duxbury. A further point behind were Dave Hillary and John Peel after a card play-off with Matt Day and Colin Barker.
The traditional team competition between the Captain’s Team and the President’s Team was a draw with each team scoring a combined total of 347 points.
Other winners on the day were Stuart Woodruff and Julian Troup who won the sweepstake for guessing the combined total of the distance hit by the drives of the captain, junior captain and senior captain (541 yards).
Gary Short, Geoff Sutcliffe, Dave Hillary, Tim Stanley and Roger Hargreaves shared the twos pool and £44 was raised towards the Captain’s Charity.
