Clitheroe rally driver Russ Thompson will get the second half of his debut BTRDA season underway this weekend, as he and co-driver Andy Murphy look to continue their good run of form on the Rainworth Skoda Forest Rally in Nottinghamshire.

Sitting atop of both the BTRDA Gold Star Championship and the BTRDA Production Car Cup, Thompson and Murphy have impressed with four top 10 finishes from four starts in the first year of competing in four wheel drive cars.

The duo, who are now into their fifth year as a pairing, have also taken a trio of top three class finishes and are now beginning to explore the performance limits of their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 as they look to make a fight of the chase for the Production Cup title.

Thompson said: “We’re thrilled to be setting stage times that are consistently in and around the top 10, whilst we’re not really pushing or taking undue risks.

“We have certainly been stronger than we thought we would be on the events so far, especially when you consider the quality and experience that is in the field.

“While we’re leading both championships, we’re not getting carried away as there is a long way to go and we know we still have a lot to learn.”

This weekend’s rally is another venture into the unknown for Thompson, as the stages are ones he never encountered during his British Rally Championship Challenge campaigns, but he is confident of a strong result.
