A Ribble Valley man has joined a small group of others to have gained World Snooker’s top coaching qualification.

Matt Haworth, from Langho, began his journey as a snooker coach over 10 years ago but can now count himself among a select group of only 35 coaches in the world with this level of qualification.

The 1st4Sport Level 2 Certificate in Snooker Coaching is designed to prepare coaches to work with players at all levels of the sport with a view to growing the game worldwide.

“It’s a great feeling to have had this success” said Matt.

“The process of gaining the qualification was a long, rigorous process which included putting together a portfolio of evidence encompassing all aspects of the game from planning and delivering sessions, to the technical elements of the snooker cue action and even nutrition.

“In addition to this, there was a great deal on health and safety and safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.”

Matt, who is also a teacher at St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington, was finally signed off earlier this month at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds where he was assessed running a one-to- one coaching session with an up and coming amateur player from the Yorkshire area.

Chris Lovell, Coaching consultant to World Snooker’s governing body, the WPBSA said of Matt: “This is a great boost to snooker in the area. Matt has brought his professional teaching skills and combined them with the sport he shows a great passion for.

“I’ve seen at first hand his progression during the past five years and his assessment was of the highest calibre together with his portfolio of evidence.”

Matt said “I’m incredibly proud that my hard work has paid off and the feedback from my assessors was really fantastic. I’m now looking forward to growing my coaching in the Ribble Valley and beyond.

“I’d also like to publicly thank Chris Lovell and Andrew Highfield who ran the course so brilliantly.”

Matt will officially be presented with his certificate by Chairman of the WPBSA, Jason Ferguson, during the World Championships in Sheffield next month.
