Mellor Brook’s John Holden and passenger Andy Winkle, from Derbyshire, claimed a dramatic victory in the Isle of Man TT sidecar race on Saturday.

The pair added to their 2011 success in a race which saw the death of fellow competitor Dwight Beare.

They took the flag almost a minute – 56.26 seconds – clear of Peter Founds and Jevan Walmsley, with Alan Founds and Aki Aalto third.

Last year’s double winners Ben and Tom Birchall had led by 34 seconds before retiring on the third and final lap.

Beare, 27, had crashed near the Rhencullen section of the Mountain Course, with passenger Benjamin Binns was airlifted to Noble’s Hospital with a fractured ankle.

The race was re-flagged and restarted, and the Birchall brothers set a new lap record of 116.798mph on lap two as they built up a commanding lead, before being forced out at Sulby Crossroads on the final circuit, and Holden and Winkle cracked on, taking full advantage to take the win.
