A truly festive treat of indoor bowling was served up in the latest round of fixtures in the Dorothy Southworth Indoor bowling League at Roefield Leisure Clitheroe.
The main course was provided by West Bradford and Sabden, who fought out a titanic tussle with the result in doubt right up to the final end.
On mat one with skippers Tom Bradshaw (West Bradford) and Dave Cunliffe (Sabden) leading their triples well, the game ebbed and flowed with neither team able to exert any real authority. However, in the second half of the game, Tom, using all his guile and experience, managed to break Sabden’s resistance, and approaching the last end had built up a lead of 17-12.
On mat two, Sabden’s trio of Roy Isherwood, Mary Griffiths and Peter Warburton started brilliantly and after five ends led 7-1. This was soon extended to 11-1, before the game changed, with West Bradford’s Mary Bradshaw, Helen Meadows and Ian Whitworth scoring a remarkable 14 shots without reply, turning the game on its head. This advantage however was shortlived as Sabden recovered their form to regain the initiative and, going into the last end had built up a lead of 22-17. This made the aggregate shot score level at 34-34, making the final end on both mats vital. Sabden held their nerve, and by scoring a three on mat one and a four on mat two took the extra two points for the overall aggregate.
The games involving Read and Hurst Green, and Waddington Blue and Clitheroe White were both won convincingly by the home team, but the final game of the week provided the surprise of the week!
Longridge Commodores’ triple of Tony Hargreaves, Tom Haworth and Terry Mundin pulled off an unexpected victory over Waddington’s Bill Rome, Wendy Rome and Jim Tierney by 22 shots to 13, although it was not enough for the aggregate.
