Clitheroe’s Mark Young has qualified to play in the Open Championship at St Andrews later this month after shooting a four-under-par total of 138 to win the final Open qualifying event at Glasgow Gailes.
The 33-year-old, who only turned professional in November last year carded rounds of 68 and 70 to secure his place at the Home of Golf in two weeks’ time.
The former conservatory fitter who turned pro after admitting to being a little “fed up” with amateur golf said: “It’s a dream come true. I’ve played a couple of Links Trophy tournaments and always loved it there so I’m really looking forward to the Open.”
Young had a scare at the par 5 14th when a wayward tee shot headed for the railway track, but the ball came to rest on the road and he was able to walk off with a birdie 4.
Mark is a three-time Lancashire amateur championship and five-time Northern Order of Merit winner.
