Stonyhurst Park Golf Club is celebrating the success of one of its members.
Daniel Whalley, 19, from Brinscall, who won the Nike Matchplay Final in Portugal in January this year.
As we reported in the autumn, Dan won his regional final at the Sandiway GC in Cheshire, which took him to the Vale De Lobo Golf Course in the Algarve for the four-day Grand Final.
The competition changed format for the final from Matchplay to Stableford.
A five-point eagle on a par 5 on day one helped to see Dan lying in second spot at the end of the first day.
By the end of the second day, he went one better and was in top spot.
The decision to take his Uncle Rick as caddie proved to be a wise move as his words of wisdom went a long way in calming young Daniel’s nerves over the final two days.
Two more steady rounds on the Ocean and Royal courses helped accumulate a total of 140 Stableford points, nine points clear of second place who had 131 points.
Dan says he played the best golf of his life and the challenge now is to keep it going on the domestic front, with the Winter League coming to an exciting climax.
The sunshine of Portugal is a long way from the frozen fairways of Stonyhurst Park Golf Club but the future certainly looks bright for this young golfer.
