Clitheroe quartet land Scratch Trophy

Four of Clitheroe’s best golfers combined well to win the East Lancashire Golf Association Scratch Trophy played at Marsden Park Golf Club on Saturday.

The team of Lancashire Amateur champion Mark Ashworth, the current Lancashire Seniors Champion Tony Holt,Tom Forrest and TomRiley finished three shots ahead of their nearest rivals to take the trophy back to Clitheroe for only the fourth time since the Ribble Valley club first entered the competition in 1919.

At Clitheroe Golf Club on Saturday the Jubilee Plate was won by Simon Raine.

He finished his round in fine style with two birdies and two pars in the last four holes to carda winning score of 75-09- 66, one better than Paul McGuire on 90-23- 67 after card play-offs with William Tyrrell and Mark Ashton. Damian Durrant had the best gross score of 72.

A Ladies’ EWGA Medal on Sunday was won by Janette Dowdy with her score of 89-16-73.

Dawn Coulter was the runner up on 111-31- 80 with Brenadette Howarth in third on 112-31- 81.

l Arron Ripley made it two wins on the bounce on Saturday at Whalley Golf Club.

Arron came in last week with a win in the Scratch competition at Whalley, and he followed this up with his second win within a week by winning the Whalley Singles Open Competition.

On a very wet day, with the golf course holding up well, “Rippers” came in with a nett 69, three under par.

Second and third place also play at Whalley, John Heap posting a 70, just beating Graham Hill on a card play-off.

Barry Dennis, also from Whalley scored an ace on the 18th hole.

Last Thursday, Whalley Ladies played a South African Scramble shotgun.

The winners were Jean Sanderson, Maureen Board, Francis Gierat and Maggie Harvey with 219 points.

Afterwards, the ladies enjoyed an Apres Golf meal and rules evening, which proved to be a great success.
