Clitheroe’s Michael Bisping is Britain’s first UFC mixed martial arts world champion.
The 37-year-old produced an upset in Los Angeles on Saturday as he knocked out Luke Rockhold in the first round to claim the middleweight title, after 26 fights in a decade with the UFC.
“The Count” put Rockhold down on the seat of his pants with two powerful left hooks, ending the bout inside four minutes at the Forum.
Bisping, who beat Anderson Silva in London in February, said: “This has been a lifetime’s work.
“I always felt I was capable of doing this, though I have had my ups and downs along the way.
“I understand why people didn’t believe in me because I had lost some key fights.
“But I always believed in myself that I could do it and it is why I took the fight on short notice.
“I shocked the world.
“I was a 10-1 underdog and I do believe it was a first-round knockout.”
He added: “Ten years and I never got a title fight, and I’m just going to relish this moment. I’m going to ride the crest of this wave.

“I envision the mother of all hangovers coming my way pretty soon. After that, I’ll take a look at the landscape and see who wants knocking out next.”
