Fresh from a three-race win in the Northern championship at Barnoldswick, Chatburn quad racer Ayrton Knowles had a phone call from friend and top southern rider Harry Walker to team up for one of the biggest meetings of the year - the Great 8 Elite Youth four-hour endurance race held near Swindon in Wiltshire.

Harry started the race with the Le Mans-style start, and after the first hour of the eight-minute lap course he had pulled out a 55 second lead when he handed over to Ayrton.

And although he came under pressure from the second placed team Rowlands and Clarke, they crashed out trying to hold the fast pace Harry and Ayrton had set.

As the race unfolded and a number of top teams hit troubles, Harry and Ayrton’s pace was relentless and, almost at three hours, Ayrton took over for his last session and with a full fuel tank would complete another nine laps and take the win by over seven and a half minutes .
