St Augustine’s pupil Charlotte Williams opened her season with a personal best to climb to number one in the UK Under 15 hammer rankings on Saturday.
Competing in Blackpool at the Mid-Lancashire League meeting, the Blackburn Harrier started her year on a high with a winning throw of 50.57m, betting last season’s 48.62m with the best throw in the UK so far this season.
Charlotte has trained five times a week through the winter months, under the tutelage of Michael Hitchon, father of Burnley’s Sophie – 2012 London Olympic finalist, who was fourth at the World Championship in Beijing last year.
Hammer Throwing is one of the most difficult and technical sports to do in athletics, requiring alot of training and dedication, and Charlotte hopes to gain the distances for qualification to go to the English Schools’ Championships this year at Gateshead International Stadium.
She has had some great tips from Sophie Hitchon, and Charlotte will travel to Liverpool on Saturday to compete, then on Sunday she will be in Hull.
