St Augustine’s pupil Charlotte Williams started the athletics season with a bang at the Lancashire Championships in Blackpool.

The 13-year-old Blackburn Harrier gained a new personal best in the discus, but her outstanding event was the hammer, where she threw 35.28m to win silver and earn the English Schools’ qualifying standard.

She then travelled to Wigan to compete in the Lancashire Schools’ Championships, where she won the hammer with 39.03m – a championship-best ever performance and a National Standard, setting a new Harriers club record.

This lifted Charlotte to ninth position in the UK rankings despite being one of the youngest competitors.
