BILLINGTON’S Graham Fielding enjoyed a fine start to the 2012 season of the National Mountain Bike Orienteering League as he earned a win on course B at Gilling Woods on the edge of the North York Moors.
Despite the cold conditions, 46 riders turned out to compete in the brilliant winter sunshine.
The various orienteering courses took in a mixture of forest roads and technical singletrack.
The dry ground gave way to some fast racing between the numerous checkpoints.
Route choice between the designated checkpoints was critical in clocking a winning time, taking in some lung-bursting ascents and flying descents.
Following a dark, cold and sometimes lonely training programme over the winter month, Fielding got his first win under the belt with a time of 1:03:42. Course A was won by Killian Lomas in 00:55:05.
Fielding said: “I would like to express my thanks to my coach Nick Dinsdale of NJD Sport Injury Clinic Clitheroe, and also my employer Fort Vale Engineering Ltd of Simonstone for their continued support.”
