Berry has the edge at Mytton Fold Golf Club

COMPETITION was fierce when Mytton Fold’s golfers played their latest round of the Winter Singles at the weekend.

Two players carded 33 points over the shortened 16-hole winter course and it took the Handicaps and Competitions Chairman Peter Main to separate the contestants.

The top three consisted of a trio of Johns, and after a protracted card play-off it was a win for former club captain John Berry (pictured, s) ahead of John Welch in second.

Third came John Parkinson, two points behind and one ahead of fourth placed Steve Worrall, who now heads the Order of Merit.

Nigel Fairhurst came home fifth and is holding down second place in the Order of Merit.

With just one lady joining this week’s competition, Judith Kay added maximum points towards her winter total and now joins Hazel Sellars at the top of the leader board.

With just two twos this week, it was a bumper payout for Bernard Downes, at the first, and Steve Gordon, at the ninth.

Steve made things a little difficult for the results team when he signed his card with an illegible signature adding to a blank space where he should have written his name. Top sleuth Main made sure that the guilty got their just desserts.

It was a full turnout in the Winter Pairs and Tony Wilson/Frank Havard once again headed the field with 40 points over the 16 holes.

Second-placed Wayne Ivinson/John Welch came in with 33 points closely followed by Nick Avino/Martin Holden and Mick Mahon/Dave Westwood on 32 points.
