The cry of, ‘Hang on to your hats’, went up as Mytton Fold Golf Club ran their Frank Hargreaves Memorial Trophy competition on a very blustery Sunday.

Gary Ashton’s late run of form bore fruit following his runner-up slot of the recent Jubilee Cup (when he lost out on a card play-off).

Just one point behind, and playing to his 5.7 handicap, was Chris Chadwick. In third, and taking the Senior’s Cup was Mick Bryan with 35 points.

In the ladies section it was a win for Allison Nuttall when her 37 points was adjudged better than Linda Clegg’s matching score following a card playoff. Hazel Sellars (34 points) finished in third.

Some 22 teams entered the Seniors Open and Martin Holden and Howard Taylor won with 44 points. Second from Blackpool North Shore GC was Colin Lynch playing off a nine handicap with Stuart Cragg off eighteen. However prize of the day went to local celebrity and past captain of Mytton Fold Frank Hindle. Twenty eight players entered the two’s competition with a prize pot of £70 which Frank won with an outrageous 40 foot putt from off the green at the first.

Nearest the pin on the 9th went to Alan Knott from Heysham GC and nearest the pin in two on the 12th went to Peter Eaton from Lobden GC.

The event gave £383 in prize money with a small profit for the Golf Club and our thanks to Nigel and Paul in the Golf Shop and to the staff and owners of Mytton Fold Hotel Complex for excellent hospitality.

Last Wednesday the ladies at Whalley Golf Club competed in the LLCGA Frances Smith Qualifier. Julie Stephenson came in first with the lowest gross score 89-20-69; Chris Thurston was second with 108-36 -72 and Vivian Lee was third with 108-35-73 .
