Nelson golfers just one step from Gleneagles

Nelson PGA Professional Simon Eaton and playing partner Kenny Ingham are one step away from following in the footsteps of Europe’s Ryder Cup heroes with an appearance in the Lombard Trophy final at Gleneagles.

Ingham teed up a chance to tread the fairways of the PGA Centenary Course, venue for the dramatic matchplay win over the United States last year, when he won his club qualifying competition with a nett score of 69.

He and Eaton now advance to the regional final at Formby Golf Club on June 9th, where they will compete against up to 70 other clubs for the chance to secure one of 16 prized spots available for the 36-hole grand final.

Once again the weather at Nelson, was not for the faint hearted, but with a typical gritty performance, Geoff Butterworth had the round of his life with a 65 gross to win the Jack Dugdale trophy and the E.G.U. Medal with a nett score of 65-3-62 on a card play-off.

Jacob Gould won Division One with a score of 70-8-62, ahead of Garry Winterflood (77-12-65) and Andrew Bannister (74-6-68).

In Division Two, first was Matthew Cook, on 81-15-66, from James Morville (79-13-66) and Headley Dransfield (82-14-68).

The gross this week went to Shaun Field with a score of 70.

On Thursday, 41 ladies of Nelson Golf Club participated in an 18-hole medal competition, won by Carol Jeffrey with a 92-23-69.

Second, on a card play-off, was Linda Smith with a 93-26-72, and third was Jane Yates with a 103-31-72.

Four ladies also took part in a nine-hole medal, won by Anne Green.

Ghyll’s April Medal was held on Saturday, with Anthony Foulger winning with 38 points from Stewart Aidrie with 37.

On Sunday, the Harry Best Memorial Trophy was won by Kieron Lee (82-15-67). Division One winner was Steven Greenwood (75-4-71), Division Two winner was Brian Strickland (82-12-70) and Division Three winner Dan Inman (92-24-68).
