Clitheroe Wolves Under 18s were agonisingly beaten on penalties in the East Lancasire FA Cup Final on Sunday at AFC Darwen.

After being promoted from league 2, and then battling through the preliminary rounds, beating Barnoldswick Town, Barrowford Celtic, Blackburn Utd and Globe Bollough, the Wolves faced Bacup Borough – the only side to beat them this year.

Bacup took the lead in the first half, taking advantage of a poor clearance, with Clitheroe slow to react.

The rest of first half was played out with both sides missing further opportunities, and Bacup failing to take advantage of the strong breeze to their backs.

Immediately after half-time, Clitheroe drew level when Jordan Monk was brought down in the area and confidently put the ball on the spot and converted.

Clitheroe had the best of the second half, but were unable to find a winner, and the game went to penalties.

Bacup Borough were left to convert the final penalty to give them a 3-2 win after a thrilling 1-1 draw, played in very competitive but friendly atmosphere.

This was the final game for some of the Clitheroe Wolves players, who it is hoped will progress to the next level and join Clitheroe FC’s development programme.
