Sean Dyche’s side, who won 15 games by the odd goal last term, with eight of those being settled in the final half-hour, were looking good for at least a point until Leroy Fer struck a late blow when tapping home after Tom Heaton had denied World Cup winner Fernando Llorente.

“We’ve had the game now and the disappointing thing is that we’re playing for points and we haven’t got any,” he said. “We have to move on and look to get points on the board as soon as possible.

“That’s the difference in this league - one chance can punish you. We did it to a lot of teams last year when we were on the back foot and created something out of nothing.

“They’ve done that. It’s very disappointing but that’s the harsh reality of the Premier League I suppose. There are positives but it’s a bit disappointing going home tonight. It’s the first time in a while.”

However, the Republic of Ireland international feels that there are plenty of positives to take heading in to the weekend fixture with Liverpool.

“You’ve got to take positives. It was our first game back in the Premier League against a decent side.

“We’ve controlled most of the game. It’s a harsh league but we’ll learn from it, take a lot of pluses and move on.

“Everyone knows how big a step it is but I thought we acquitted ourselves very well.

“The boys looked really confident and you can tell that they’re excited to be back in the Premier League. We didn’t looked over-awed and we took the game to them.”

He added: “I think we showed a lot of belief that we maybe didn’t see at the start of the last campaign. We believe in ourselves and that came across.

“Sometimes that’s not the case but the lads were confident and looked really comfortable at this level. We’ll look to kick on and get points on the board as soon as possible.”
