Waddington won 4-1 at Water FC to claim promotion to the East Lancashire League First Division.
Joyous celebrations from Waddington’s large band of travelling supporters greeted the referee’s final whistle.
Starting the final fixture with the knowledge that a win or a draw would see them promoted as Second Division runners-up behind Longshaw, Waddington took the game to Water.
Gary Hickling was prominent throughout, ably supported by the tenacious Liam Gidlow.
Captain Gary Brunskill anchored the midfield and chances soon began to flow.
Alan Coar, replacing the suspended Luke Conti, opened the scoring, and Robert Lloyd made it two from the penalty spot after Gidlow’s skill and trickery drew the foul.
Chris Baron was unlucky to see a shot crash back off the post after a terrific run.
A momentary lack of concentration at the start of the second half enabled the Water forward to reduce the arrears with a sublime lob, but Waddington held firm, and Phil Darnell pushed forward to great effect, as two further goals from Coar stretched the lead to 4-1.
Promotion, ground improvements and a well-organised infrastructure off the field point to a bright few years for the club.
