The goal-less draw against Boro at the Riverside was the Republic of Ireland international’s fourth start since joining the club from Norwich City on transfer deadline day and Heaton was pleased with his contribution.

Asked whether the new man has settled, the England goalkeeper said: “I think that’s right. Ability wise you can see how much quality he has got.

“Coming into the way we play and the system it is probably slightly different to what he’s seen before, we are slightly different in how we go about it and I think it’s just taken time for that bedding in period.

“I thought he was outstanding (against Boro). He used the ball really well and created a few chances, a few shots on goal.

“It’s a great sign of what he’s all about and what we’re going to see from him.”

Survival is within touching distance for the Clarets heading into the game against Everton and Heaton says that it would mean everything to the players to get it sewn up.

“It’s everything, that’s the aim, that’s always been the ambition this season, to stay in the division and build from there,” said Heaton, who saved Ross Barkley’s penalty on his last visit to Goodison Park.

“In my time here the evolution has been that building and this season will be no different. That (staying up) is the next step for us.

“I think there’s also been a bit of evolution during the season this year. We’re constantly moving things forward and the important thing will be to get safety and see where we can get to ready for whatever is next.”
