Rimington........................2

Craven Cup holders Rimington travelled to current Craven League leaders Cononley and earned a hard-fought victory to see them through to the next round.

The visitors took the lead in the second minute when Kershaw kicked downfield, the centre half completely mis-judging it and Baygot raced through to calmly lob the advancing keeper.

The home side came more into the game now in the second half, sensing that, at 1-0 they were still in the tie and Kershaw, a virtual spectator for long periods, had to dive smartly to his right on 65 minutes. He was, however, helpless to prevent the equaliser five minutes later, a good move resulting in a forward finishing from close range.

Rimington changed their formation now, going to 4-3-3 and this produced a sustained spell of pressure, Benfield, Lishman and Walsh bossing the midfield with Fagan and Hutchinson supporting Baygot. This lead to a free-kick on the right which Lishman whipped in, Baygot stooped to glance a brilliant header into the top corner to put the holders back in front, and another Lishman free-kick almost found the striker again, but this time he was just unable to get the required touch at the back post.

Walsh and Lishman combined with 10 to go but the latter’s effort beat the keeper only to drift just wide.

Saturday sees the start of the President’s Cup, another away tie, this time at Canberra, kick-off at 1-45 p.m.
