Ribblesdale School’s Year 8 football team capped off another excellent season by being crowned champions of Lancashire.
The youngsters beat Baines High School 2-1 at Squires Gate FC in Blackpool with goals from Simon Wharton and Ewan Jones ensuring the local school recorded their second Lancashire Cup win in the last two years.
Playing on a full sized pitch for the first time, the team worked tremendously hard, Ribblesdale starting the brighter of the two teams. However they did need two outstanding saves from Jack Graham to keep the scores level.
Some superb midfield performances by Max Cane and Elliot Watson created opportunities for the attacking prowess of Josh Tetley and Alex Chambers, with James Nightingale dazzling on the right wing.
The defending quartet of James Geldard, Scott Wilson, James Billington and James Scorah were as rock solid as ever; being meticulously marshalled by Simon Wharton.
Baines piled on the pressure in the final ten minutes but the fresh legs of Harry Lang, Will Wrathall and Joe Noone stood tall and, when Ewan Jones superbly volleyed home, the game was as good as over.
Furthermore, on the same day and due to some excellent displays for the school team throughout the year, both Simon Wharton and Scott Wilson have now signed contracts with Burnley FC’s Academy.
A school spokesman said: “All the players would also like to thank local building company Valley Driveways for once again sponsoring the team by providing their school football kit.”
