The 27-year-old, who qualifies through his Toronto-born father, Harry, represented Scotland at Under 19, 21 and B leve;, but eventually took the decision to represent Benito Floro’s side.

Arfield, who has scored seven times this term, has joined up with his new team-mates, including David Edgar, ahead of a FIFA World Cup qualifying double header against Mexico.

“An international debut is brilliant and it’s something that I’m definitely looking forward to,” he said. “I’ve spoken to a few boys that are already in the set up and it’s a top set up there.

“In terms of opening doors in my career, I think this is the best thing for me to do.”

Canada face El Tricolor in the early hours of Saturday in Vancouver, at the BC Place Stadium, where more than 46,000 tickets have been sold for the fixture. They will then travel to the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on March 30th for the return clash.

“It’s an unbelievable thing to look forward to. You look at iconic stadiums around the world and the Azteca is definitely in there.

“Football opens doors because these are life experiences that I never would’ve had. I get to jump on a plane and see things that I never would’ve seen, and meet people I never would’ve met.”
