CLITHEROE boss Carl Garner has one focus now for the remainder of the season.
A 2-1 defeat against Lancaster City put a ‘Giant Axe’ through Garner’s remaining cup ambitions as they slipped out of the Doodson Sports Cup in the second round.
First-half strikes from David Swarbrick and Craig Carney gave the hosts a comfortable cushion at the interval, and Tony Hesketh’s men hung on after Josh Hine scored his fifth goal in as many games to halve the deficit on the hour mark.
That defeat saw the Shawbridge side wiped out of their final domestic cup competition this season after recently exiting the FA Cup, FA Trophy and the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy.
But with the Blues languishing in 18th spot in the Evo-Stik First Division North table, and having failed to record victory so far in October, September’s manager of the month Garner will be relieved that there will be no further distractions to hinder his club’s league progress.
Clitheroe travel to the Kirklands Stadium on Saturday to face lowly Cammell Laird.
Tony Sullivan’s men have recorded just one victory in 11 games, and only Ossett Albion separate the Merseyside outfit from the foot of the table.
Clitheroe then travel to Greater Manchester on Tuesday evening to face high-flying Woodley Sports, with kick-off at 7-45 p.m.
