Jay Rodriguez close to signing for Burnley FC

NATURAL born Claret Jay Rodriguez is close to agreeing a new contract to stay at Turf Moor.

The 21-year-old has attracted attention this week, with England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce making two personal checks on the forward, as well as requesting video footage.

Burnley-born Rodriguez is currently enjoying his best run in the side, looking forward to what would be his 10th successive start at Norwich City tomorrow, and his new deal is just reward for the progress he has made.

A month ago, boss Brian Laws revealed the club had started talks over extending his stay on an improved contract, saying: “We’re mindful he’s coming out of contract at the end of the season, but he’s young, he loves the place and I’ve already spoken to him about it.

“We’ve done it weeks and weeks ago, spoken to him about improving his contract, and I said once we get the international break out of the way, we’ll sit down with his agent and progress something for him, because we want to keep hold of him.

“He’s not going anywhere.”

And official confirmation is expected imminently, as Laws admitted yesterday: “Things are moving rapidly forward. We hope to make an announcement very shortly.”
