The 27-year-old will have to sacrifice any pre-planned vacations this summer with the World Cup and a potential European campaign on the agenda.

The Icelandic international will likely get a couple of weeks of ‘down time’ once the curtain closes on the domestic calendar on May 13th before joining up with his team mates at the end of the month.

Heimir Hallgrímsson’s men will make their final preparations for Russia with friendlies against Norway and Ghana at the start of June, both in Reykjavík, ahead of their Group D opener against Argentina at the Otkrytiye Arena in Moscow.

And, should Burnley keep hold of seventh spot in the Premier League, which is now more than likely, Gudmundsson could be travelling to another pocket of Europe with the Clarets.

At present, Sean Dyche’s side would enter the Europa League at the second qualifying round on July 26th and Gudmundsson’s involvement in that phase would be dependent on his nation’s progress.

“I’m not going to complain because I’m playing in the World Cup and the Europa League with Burnley,” he said. “I’m not that old, I think I can handle it!

“It’s going really well. It just shows that I’m part of two really good teams in Burnley and the Icelandic national squad. It’s going really well and I just want to keep going.

“The Europa League is nice, even though it’s tough to play on Thursday-Sunday. It’s a great experience going to different countries and playing against different teams. We need to finish these three games and see what happens.

“The Champions League is the best one domestically, the Europa League is a bit below it but that could be our next target!

“There are some big teams though and it’s a great competition. Hopefully we can make the most of it.”
