Hurst Green battled to a vital victory as they maintained their outside hope of runners-up spot in the West Lancashire League First Division.

After an uneventful five minutes, the villagers took the lead when Bartlett’s free kick bounced awkwardly in front of the keeper, who parried it straight to Sargeson, who rifled home.

The visitors then held the ascendancy for a while and two fine headers fell just the wrong side of the post.

On 26 minutes Rick Coar was played through and superbly held off a challenge before expertly finishing to make it 2-0.

After the break, Ulverston had a great chance, but the stiker fluffed his lines. This proved costly as Coar went down in the box on the hour and the referee awarded a dubious penalty.

The ace marksman picked himself up and expertly slotted home.

Ulverston pulled one back when Bee pulled off a great one-handed save, but Lawlor slammed home the reboundto make it 3-1.
