Dog Inn manager Simon Kerins vowed to go one better next year after his side lost their first-ever Terry Cattermole Trophy at Accrington Stanley on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Whalley side started slowly, conceding a goal within 20 minutes and, but for some superb saves from keeper Joe Hudson and poor finishing, would have been further behind at the interval.

Church’s second arrived early in the second half, but the introduction of Liam Boyle and Elliott Bywater gave Dog fresh impetus. Tom Wood forced home from close range with 25 minutes remaining, but Church held on.
