Gray struck twice at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday to hit 20 goals for the season, and help Burnley go top of the pile.

His second was probably his best in a claret and blue shirt, dragging a pass from substitute Fredrik Ulvestad in front of him, before arrowing a shot inside the nar post from 20 yards.

And the Championship’s top-scorer, asked if it was his most signifcant strike, said: “Since being here, definitely. It’s the highest I’ve ever played in my career, and to get the win to take us top is massive for me.

“But we need to stay there.

“We’ll go again on Saturday.”

Gray had gone four games without a goal, but his confidence didn’t dip in that time: “I only went four games without scoring and I think I got two assists in that time, created a couple of chances.

“It’s happened, it’s going to happen.

“But I never doubted myself and the boys didn’t either.

“We were winning games, so if people want to take that as me being on a bad run, they can do that because we’re winning games and that’s all that matters.”

With 12 games remaining, Burnley are in good shape as they look to earn a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Gray hopes the Clarets can keep their foot on the pedal: “It’s the first time we’ve been top this season.

“From where I was this time last year to be top of the league is massive for me.

“But there are 12 games to go and that’s a lot of games.

“It’s not all won and lost now.

“There’s a long way to go and there are teams below us who have games in hand.

“It’s going to go right to the end.”

A sold out away end of over 3,700 Burnley fans enjoyed the win and what it meant, and the players went over at the final whistle to show their appreciation, throwing their shirts into the stand.

Gray said: “They were fantastic. It’s the loudest I’ve heard them since I’ve been here.

“They were great and they stuck behind us even when we went 1-0 down.

“It just to show them that we’re all in it together, and we’re doing it for them as well as each other.

“They were fantastic and they stuck with us as they have done all season, and it was just to show them we appreciate it.”

It was the first time Burnley had come from behind to win in the league this season, at a perfect time, and Gray added: “I don’t think we go behind too often, but it was good to show a reaction after their goal. It was quite late on as well so to get back in the game was obviously fantastic. When we do go in front we tend to hold onto it.”
