The Cottagers sit nine points adrift of both Newcastle United and Burnley with an inferior goal difference, having played a game more.

Both sides, however, have to go to Craven Cottage, in Fulham's remaining home games.

Parker's men also have to go to Southampton and Manchester United, and look like they will need to win all four games.

Newcastle host Arsenal on Sunday, while Burnley entertain West Ham on Monday night in their games in hand, but Parker hasn't given up hope of reeling either side into danger, and, speaking after Saturday's 2-0 defeat at neighbours Chelsea, he admitted: "We have to win four games – we will soon find out.

"If we can keep the performance level like today, then we have a chance of beating Burnley, then Southampton, Manchester United and then Newcastle.

"That is the task ahead.

"It is a difficult one, but it is one that with the right way about us, I think we can do."

Parker took confidence from the display at Stamford Bridge, despite a relatively routine win for the hosts, who have now lost only one of their last 40 derby clashes with Fulham: "We have not got the positive result, but I got attitude, desire and a performance as well.

"We have seen what this team (Chelsea) is capable of here against Real Madrid, but we limited that.

"Overall, at times their quality came through in two goals, which was sloppy from us, but I am proud of my team.

"In certain moments, we just fell a little bit short."
