Smith said: “I got a call from Burnley to say they were interested in me and they said to come along for a week.

“I played in the game against Sheffield FC and after the game they said they were happy with my performance, so here I am.

“It’s great to be here, as Burnley are a team that want to get back to the Premier League and hopefully in future years I can add something to the squad.”

He featured regularly for Arsenal U18s last season after joining from Chelsea in the 2012/13 campaign.

After leaving Chelsea, Smith attracted interest from both Manchester City and Liverpool before opting to sign at Arsenal.

Born in Epsom, Smith has represented Austria at youth level after qualifying through his grandfather.

He was called up for three games against Denmark, Hungary and Switzerland after being spotted in an Arsenal youth game.
