Clarets won't lose belief says skipper

Burnley are desperate for some fortune away from Turf Moor, having lost seven of their last eight fixtures on their travels by a solitary goal, but the England international was quick to shoot down any claims that their trials and tribulations would knock the squad’s confidence.

He said: “We’ll keep working hard, keep believing in what we’re doing, keep giving everything that we’ve got for the shirt, again the fans here were incredible and, as I say, we haven’t lost belief in what we’re about.

“We’ve gone close again here and hopefully the three points will be there on Saturday.

“I think once the dust settles we’ll be able to take positives from that performance.

“It’s a tough place to come at the end of the day, they’re a tough side, but going forward we can hopefully keep building.

“We haven’t lost any belief and we certainly feel that the result is just around the corner.

“Once the dust settles we’ll hopefully see some positives through it and keep moving things forward.

“The performance was good today, we’ll look to build on that this week and take it in to the game on Saturday.”

Though the Clarets restricted the Reds to just three shots on target in 90-plus minutes they were undone with the final kick of the first half and again just after the hour.

Dutchman Wijnaldum, a £25m capture in the summer, capitalised on a lucky break inside the box after his initial flick had been blocked by Ben Mee.

And then Heaton was unsighted for the home side’s winner, getting down late to Can’s pinpoint strike from 25 yards out with his vision obscured by his defensive barrier.

With ‘Lady Luck’ seemingly against them, the goalkeeper said: “That’s how it feels a little bit.

“The first half performance was excellent, we restricted them to nothing, we’ve been at it, mixed the play well and scored a good goal but it’s tough to concede so late on in the first half.

“There’s a bit of a ricochet and it’s quite fortuitous how it’s landed at his feet in the middle of the six-yard box.

“The lad has taken it well, he’s feinted me one side and put it back across the other way and they’ve gone in at 1-1 a little bit frustratingly really.”

He added: “I don’t think that they’d had a shot on target. The first goal was their first shot on target and their second goal was the second one.

“It’s difficult but that’s the quality of their team. We know what it’s about, we know the Premier League, so we’ve just got to do a bit more to stop it from getting to that.

“It’s similar fashion to their second goal really. Can has come forward, my vision is slightly blocked by Ben (Mee) so I was slightly delayed getting after it and then they’ve got something to hold on to.

It’s a little bit frustrating. We fashioned a few chances, a few half chances, but it wasn’t to be.

“Again there are positives to take from the performance but we just need to turn them in to results.”
