Vokes’ penalty gave Burnley the lead at Nottingham Forest, only for Simon Cox to head an equaliser before the break.

But the strike took the former Wolves frontman to 10 for the season, two behind his haul for Bournemouth back in 2007/08.

And the 24-year-old smiled: “It feels good. It’s going well and it’s good to get the goals and keep the confidence going.

“As a striker you always set the target of double figures and you want to go from there and hopefully I can chip in with a few more.

“I just want to keep going and see how it goes.”

Forest were unhappy at the penalty award for handball against Gonzalo Jara, but Vokes was in no doubt: “It was a penalty. The ball’s been crossed and the lad’s there with his arms in the air.

“It’s a harsh one on him, I suppose he hasn’t meant to handle it but the ref’s given it and it was the right decision.”

However, while Vokes is now level in terms of Championship goals with strike partner Danny Ings, who has 14 in all competitions, he was quick to hail Burnley’s defensive efforts at the City Ground: “I think in the second half we were maybe backs against the wall so coming away with a point, it’s a good one in the end.

“It’s always good to look at the table when you’re top of the league.

“But we know there’s a long way to go.

“In previous seasons maybe we would have buckled and lost that game but we came through and got that point in the end.

“I know Forest had a few chances at the end but we stayed strong and I think that’s what we pride ourselves on.

“We’ve got the strength in depth and I think the lads did well to hold onto the point.”

Vokes feels it is another result to make the league sit up and take notice: “We said before the game that it could be a marker and show the league what we’re about.

“They beat Leicester in their last game so they’re obviously beating teams that are at that end of the table so we have to be happy with a point.

“But every game’s a tough one in this league and we have another tough one at Huddersfield now.”
