Heaton played the second half after coming on for Joe Hart at the interval as Gareth Southgate completed his four-game stint as interim boss.

The 30-year-old had little chance with Iago Aspas' curler which brought Spain back into the game, before Real Madrid midfielder Isco snatched an injury time equaliser, forcing the ball through Heaton's legs.

For Heaton, it was his longest taste of international football to date, after coming on for the last three minutes of the 2-1 win over Australia in a pre-Euro 2016 friendly at Sunderland's Stadium of Light in May.

Clarets teammate Michael Keane was on the bench but was an unused substitute as he is forced to wait for his first senior cap.
