The 23-year-old has signed a three-year deal for a fee believed to be slightly more than £500,000, after both Burnley and North End met the Spireites’ asking price and were given permission to speak to the player.

Boss Sean Dyche said: “He is someone we have had our eye on for a while, and after playing against Chesterfield last week, his performance confirmed our thoughts and made the decision for us.

“He is definitely one who can push for the team now, but also one for the future because we are confident we can improve him as he has a great desire to learn.”

Darikwa made his professional debut in 2010 for Chesterfield, and last season made 56 appearances in all competitions as they reached the play-off semi-finals in League 1.
