Defender Stephen Ward insists the Clarets have set the bar by beating Championship leaders Middlesbrough in the third round of the FA Cup.
Sean Dyche’s side haven’t beaten any of the division’s top six in the league this season but the Republic of Ireland international’s winner at the Riverside showed that the Clarets are certainly capable.
It’s great to come here and win. We’ve not beaten sides who are in the top four or five in the league yet so it’s a good marker for usStephen Ward
The 30-year-old scored his first competitive goal for the club in the 71st minute with a sweeping volley past Tomas Mejias as Burnley came from behind to win a game for the first time this term.
“It’s a good result for us,” he said. “First half we didn’t really deal with their shape, but you have to give them credit - they’re a good side, top of the league and really outplayed us in the first half but we dug in there and a moment of quality got us back in the game.
“In the second half we were much better, much more solid. It’s a tough place to come. They don’t lose many here and they don’t concede many goals.
“We’re happy to win and get through to the next round, albeit we believe the first half performance could have been a lot better, but to come from 1-0 down is pleasing.
“We probably gave them too much respect in the first half, their shape caused us a lot of problems and we weren’t on it.
“In the second half we were a lot better and thankfully we got the win and we’re through to the next round.”
Ward, who netted after Rouwen Hennings had wiped out Diego Fabbrini’s opener, added: “My job is to mess around with the goalie and the ball just fell and no-one seemed to be there so I stepped off him, hit it, hoped for the best and thankfully it went in.
“I don’t get many now. It’s just nice to score and pleasing to play and get another 90 minutes under my belt.
“It’s great to come here and win. We’ve not beaten sides who are in the top four or five in the league yet so it’s a good marker for us.
“The manager told us to soak in that feeling of beating a team like this because there’s plenty more battles like this still to come against teams as good as these.”
