Burnley 1, Manchester City 2

For the first time in 38 games on home soil the Clarets were beaten having taken the lead as Manchester City took maximum points.

Dean Marney had given the hosts the advantage with a scintillating volley with 15 minutes gone in front of the Sky Sports cameras only for City to hit back with a goal in either half for Sergio Aguero.

Prior to kick off the Clarets were hit by the news that skipper Tom Heaton's run of playing 142 league games in succession for the club had come to an end due to a calf strain sustained in the days leading up to the fixture.

Paul Robinson, who hadn't started a competitive game in 802 days, was the goalkeeper's deputy as the former England international made his first appearance in the Premier League since May 2012 when Rovers were relegated against Wigan Athletic at Ewood Park.

And the 37-year-old made a confident start behind a back four that included stand-in skipper Ben Mee, featuring against his former employers.

After referee Andre Marriner seemingly ignored appeals for a penalty at one end, as Nicolas Otamendi clumsily clattered in to the back of Jeff Hendrick from Steven Defour's set-piece, Robinson sprung in to action at the opposite end, denying Aguero down at his right hand upright in front of the Jimmy McIlroy Stand.

Sean Dyche's side had been unrecognisable against West Brom in the week as they suffered a second successive 4-0 drubbing at the Hawthorns, but against Pep Guardiola's City they reverted back to the attributes and characteristics that has made life difficult for most that take them on at Turf Moor.

The hosts, taking up an unbreakable shape, did as the Baggies had done to them on Monday evening, allowing the visitors possession in front of them before closing the space, stealing the ball and breaking.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson had a sight of goal on the counter when Matt Lowton's decoy run freed up space infield but the Iceland international's left-footed effort was smothered by Claudio Bravo.

The one-time Barcelona stopper couldn't do anything to stop Burnley's next attempt on target, though.

Through the years City have fallen victim to a collection of simply outstanding goals against the Clarets in the top flight - with those from Ashley Barnes and George Boyd standing out.

Now add Marney's name to that list. The midfielder, who hadn't scored in two-and-a-half years when netting in a 3-3 draw against Birmingham City at St Andrews, picked out the corner with a thumping volley on the quarter-of-an-hour mark.

The longest serving member of the current incumbents hadn't scored in the top flight since 2009 when beating Tim Howard in Hull City's 3-2 win over Everton, but this was worth waiting for.

From Robinson's set-piece, Otamendi's headed clearance dropped for Marney 20 yards from goal and his thunderous first time strike didn't deviate as it fizzed past Bravo.

Once behind, City's incisive approach started to find success. Robinson was required to react to Nolito's shot as the Spaniard, formerly of Celta Vigo, attempted to pass the ball in to the far corner.

Aguero, leaning back and failing to get his head over the ball, then found the stands as he profited from Fernandinho's cushioned assist on the edge of the box.

Then Yaya Toure, who scored twice against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on his return to action, drilled in to the side-netting after forcing an entry in to Burnley's penalty area.

But just when it appeared as though the home side would hold out until the break, City equalised. Raheem Sterling's corner was helped on by Fernando at the near post and Aguero, who benefitted from a number of ricochets, poked home at the back post.

The Argentinian striker almost turned the game on its head moments later but his shot on the turn was brilliantly saved by Robinson, who rolled back the years to float to his right and push the ball past the post.

Dyche was forced to ring the changes with half-time closing in when Marney and Gudmundsson pulled up in innocuous looking circumstances with the pair replaced by Scott Arfield and James Tarkowski.

The re-shuffle certainly didn't affect the home side, however, and they went close to getting back on level terms just before the break.

Arfield and Lowton combined down the right hand side, the latter provided the cross but Sam Vokes couldn't guide his header beyond Bravo.

Burnley were just as brilliant in the second half, putting City to the sword and preventing them from playing, but they were ultimately down by another scrappy goal.

Mee and Stephen Ward's collision saw the ball break fortuitously for Fernandinho and the City skipper put the ball in to the six-yard box from the byline where Aguero acted instinctively to tap the ball in to the net.

The Clarets continued to push and probe for a point, undettered by the riches - both in finance and quality - ahead of them.

And they had their chances - the most noteable when Aleksander Kolarov blocked Michael Keane's header as Tarkowski guided Defour's delivery back in to the danger zone.

Substitute Barnes also went close to hitting the headlines with a late chance but Bravo was equal to the forward's acrobatics after Tarkowski had flicked on Lowton's throw in.
