Blues boss Simon Garner claimed that his dismissal in Tuesday night’s Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy semi-final triumph over Atherton Collieries was indefensible.

Garner picked up two bookings during the tie at the Lancashire FA’s headquarters in Leyland, though Clitheroe went on to win 2-0 courtesy of late goals from skipper David Lynch and Louis Mayers.

It was stupid, I can’t defend it.

The first yellow was awarded for dissent in the 28th minute, but within 60 seconds Garner was given his marching orders for a reckless challenge. After leaving the field with head in hands, Garner said: “It was stupid, I can’t defend it.

“I could moan until the cows come home about the first yellow card but stupidly and naively, which shouldn’t happen with my age, experience and position, I dived in to a 50/50.

“The lad jumped over me, I didn’t touch him, but all the players have crowded round the referee because I’d already been booked.

“I couldn’t believe it. I’m disappointed in myself because I feel I’ve let the lads down. They’ve dug me out of a hole by giving me everything.”
