Aberdeen skipper looking forward to Burnley Europa League clash

The two sides kick off their seasons at the end of July after being drawn to face each other in the second round of qualifying.

The Dons have gone out in the third round in their last four seasons, but have been handed a tough assignment against Premier League side Burnley who finished seventh last season.

After going out to unknown quantities in Cypriot side Apollon Limassol and Slovenian outfit Maribor in their previous two efforts, Shinnie is hoping their knowledge of English football can pay off this time.

"It's a tough tie and everyone knows that, but it's a bit different because everyone knows what they are and who they are," he told Red TV.

"Sometimes you get foreign teams you don't know much about and you are maybe expected to beat them because you don't know much about them and they are better than what you think.

"But we know what Burnley are, last season you saw how good they are and why they are in this position.

"It will be a tough game but it's one we are all looking forward to. If we can win, that would be brilliant."

Shinnie heads into the new season as a Scotland player after finally getting his international bow in South America.

He was first called into the senior squad by Gordon Strachan in 2015, but had to wait a further three years to get his maiden cap, which came in a 2-0 defeat to Peru in May.

The versatile 26-year-old cancelled his stag do to go on the tour and was rewarded with a second outing against Mexico.

He has admitted that finally getting his chance in a Scotland shirt has relieved some pressure.

He said: "It was a summer to remember for me.

"It is a bit of a weight off my shoulders, it feels like its been a long time coming and it is something that I have been working towards.

"To finally get it was a great thing and the experience of being away in South America with all the supporters and the Azteca Stadium and everything else, it was certainly a trip I will never forget."
