Clitheroe’s valiant effort in vain

CLITHEROE came up just short against title-chasing Baxenden in an enthralling encounter at Chatburn Road.

Batting first Baxenden posted a respectable score of 202 – a total which Clitheroe found themselves just unable to reach, eventually being bowled out 19 runs shy.

Baxenden opener Callum Waddington along with Mark Rishton were the heroes of their innings, scoring 65 and 42 respectively.

And the total could possibly have been higher if not for some inspired bowling by Kashif Siddique, who finished the day with fine figures of 5-56.

In reply Clitheroe started well and only lost their first wicket when they had 48 up on the scoreboard.

Opener Siddique, fresh from his bowling master class, hit 36 off just 20 as he and Josh McDowell (20) got Clitheroe off to the perfect start.

Once their wickets had fallen through Clitheroe struggled to keep with the pace and despite good knocks from Naeem Ashraff (25) and Andrew Pearce (40) they always had their backs up against it especially with some fine bowling courtesy of Liam Riley (5-72) and Babar Naeem (5-61).

Next up for Clitheroe is a trip to Padiham on Saturday.
