Victory in the final league fixture meant that Clitheroe Cobras Under 9s were crowned Lancashire League Division One champions for the first time in the club’s history.
An emphatic victory against Ramsbottom meant that the Ribble Valley youngsters ended their season with a near perfect record of 17 wins and a solitary loss to Greenmount.
Cobras Team Supremo Jack Atkinson said: “It’s been an amazing season! We just let the boys go out there and express themselves. It makes the achievement even more special because there have been a lot of good Under 9s teams at the club in previous seasons, yet none have managed what these players have.
“I think I was more nervous than the players as we approached the back end of the season and were in with a chance of the league and a piece of history.”
Meanwhile, Cobras Under 12s ensured they qualified for the Lancashire Cup next season by defeating Euxton by eight runs in a game that ebbed and flowed right to the end at Chatburn Road.
Having struggled to get on top of the visitors’ bowling through the early part of their innings,it was the pinch hitting of Tom Doherty(18) and an invaluable partnership of 30 between Dan Kellington (18) and Matt Neilson (12) that ensured a respectable total for Clitheroe.
The light deteriorated rapidly in the second innings but Euxton seemed well on course for victory while skipper James Bone remained at the crease.
His dismissal for 38, backed up by a breathtaking catch by debutant Jamie Birtwell, made the run chase much more challenging.
Yet again Dan Kellington and Matt Neilson rescued their side as both picked up wickets to leave Euxton eight runs short of their target.
